This page will show you how to Crochet a gorgeous blanket using the Double Crochet stitch.  With the help of some Step by Step Pictures.

The double crochet (dc)  is one of the most common crochet stitches and is twice as tall as a single crochet (sc)

A double crochet fabric is a lovely flexible stitch great for sweaters, shawls and blankets

Double Crochet  = US Terminology

Triple Crochet = UK terminology

For the purpose of this blanket pattern I will be using

US terminology for Double Crochet = Dc

Starting your blanket and working Double Crochet stitch into the chain you have just created.

NOTE: Yarn always comes over from back to front.

  1. Yarn over the hook (yo) and insert your hook between the 2 front loops and under the back bump loop of the fourth chain from the hook.
  2. Yarn over the hook and gently pull the wrapped hook through the center of the chain stitch, carrying the wrapped yarn through the stitch

Now, you should have 3 loops on your hook.

  3. Yarn over the hook and draw your yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook.

  4. Yarn over the hook and draw your yarn through the last 2 loops on the hook.

One double crochet (dc) stitch is complete.

You will have one loop remaining on your hook.
  5. To finish your first row of double crochet, work 1 double crochet stitch in each successive chain stitch across the foundation chain, beginning in the next chain of the foundation chain.

  6. TURN (Turning your work allows you to start on row 2)

  7. Chain 3 (also called the turning chain) (ch 3)  then yarn over the hook (yo).

  8. Skipping the first stitch of the row directly below the turning chain, insert your hook into the next stitch.

NOTE: Easy mistakes to aviod. Or if you find your blanket growing extra stitches or have holes at the sides.

Be careful Don’t insert your hook in the wrong place.

Don’t work a stitch into the first stitch of the row after the turning chain. Doing so produces an extra stitch, and if you continue to add a stitch in each row, your design gets wider and wider while it gets longer and longer. Be sure to count your stitches frequently to make sure that you haven’t inadvertently gained (or lost) any stitches along the way.

Sometimes the turning chain on a double crochet row leaves a gap at the beginning of the row. To get a neater edge, try chaining 2 instead of 3 stitches for the turning chain.

  9. Repeat Steps for the amount of double crochet (dc) stitches.

You will work in Rows back and forward. Turning and creating a Chain stitch to start each row. Continue working like this Until your preferred length of the blanket is achieved.

I have included several size options and guidelines on how you could make this bigger or smaller.

Row 2: Ch3 (counts as 1st stitch throughout pattern) dc in each st to last st, turn

Row 3: Ch3, Dc in each stitch to last st, turn

Row 4: Repeat row 3 until work measures 35 inches long

To finish off the blanket

Single Crochet around the blanket.in either main colour or a contrasting colour

When you reach the corners,  work 3SCs into the corner stitch.

This helps your blanket edges lay flat and not curl up.

Fasten off and weave in ends

HOw you decide to finish your blanket is completely up to you. I added in an Owl applique making it a very unique baby blanket for the recipient.
