If you just starting your knitting journey and looking for a cute, simple knit project.

these easy knit baby booties are perfect for beginners or like me who loves an easy knit bootie pattern.

You only need basic stitches, 4.0mm straight needles, and a bit of soft double-knit yarn to make something adorable and handmade that is perfect for gift-giving.

I personally thing there is nothing cuter to gift to a new baby, or to make these booties as an adorable baby shower gift!

These baby booties are knit flat (no knitting in the round!), which makes them ideal for new knitters. They’re worked in garter stitch—the most beginner-friendly stitch—and sewn up at the end to shape them into little booties.

Beginner Tips for knitting baby booties

  • Don’t worry if your stitches aren’t perfect—the booties will still look lovely!

  • Use soft, washable yarn that’s safe for babies.

  • You can add a small bow, button, or ribbon to personalize them (just make sure it’s securely attached and baby-safe).

Knitting Baby booties is Perfect for Gifts

These booties are great as a handmade baby shower gift—or just as a feel-good project if you’re learning how to knit. They’re quick, simple, and a sweet way to build your skills while making something useful.

I often make a few in different colours and leave them to the side to sew up when i hear of a new babies arrival! and they are all ready to go

What You’ll Need:

  • Yarn: 50g of Double Knit (DK) baby yarn (I can make a few pairs of booties from a ball of yarn and left over yarn from other projects making these a great stashbusting project too.

  • Needles: 4.00 mm straight knitting needles

  • Tapestry needle (for sewing the booties together)

  • Scissors

NOTE:

  1. Don’t worry too much about exact tension—these booties are quite forgiving and still come out cute even if your size is a little different.
  2. Slip the FIRST stitch of each ROW this creates a better seam to sew, and makes it wasier to identify the stitches when you come to pick up the stitches at the sides of the insteps.

Summary of knitting a babt bootie- You will start by knitting the cuff, moving onto the top front of booties, which is made by picking up stitches along the length for the front of each sides of the booties instep and then working the sides of the booties, then onto the sole of the bootie.

Stitch You’ll Use:

  • Garter Stitch (this just means you knit every row—super easy Right!)

You’ll also use a couple of beginner-friendly techniques like:

  • M1 (Make One Increase) – creates a new stitch by lifting the strand between two stitches and knitting into it to make a new stitch.

  • K2TOG (knit two stitches together to decrease)

  • Picking up stitches to create the sides of the bootie

Locate the Edge Stitches of the insteps

    • Along the sides of the instep, you’ll see the edge stitches or loops from the previous rows.

    • These are where you’ll insert your needle to pick up new stitches.

    Insert Your Needle

    • With the right side (RS) facing you, insert the needle from front to back through the edge stitch (or just under the edge loops).
